My many issues with this novel include: 1: the confusing style Gordimer used for writing this novel. Not much better defense for a 3 than that --- First review: The last 80 or so pages were so much better than the first 260 but my interest in the book remained tepid to the end. At the same time, there are moments of such beauty and depth that would literally make me screech to a halt. But I'm glad I kept reading.
