The Steerswoman

Steerswomen, and a very few Steersmen, are members of an order dedicated to discovering and disseminating knowledge.

I'm really interested in the world Kirstein has created -- okay no, not the world so much as the character of a Steerswoman (or man).

As our book begins, she is curious about some unusual 'jewels' found in unlikely places, such as inside a tree. I loved the bit where all the steerswomen (and steersmen) gave us some insight about howThe one where Rowan finds a gem, takes a journey, meets some wizards, and begins to discover that she may be wrong in thinking she lives in a fantasy universe.And knowledge, the gaining and the sharing, is of utmost importance to Rowan and the other Steerswomen and Steersmen. A steerswoman is bound to answer any question she is asked, except in one circumstance, and … Sign me up, please. This is a world largely free of patriarchal and gender expectations, where roles are filled by both men and women. Two intelligent adults in one book! Or would you ignore the danger and do everything you could to find her? She travels the world collecting and passing on knowledge, freely answering any question about anything as long as she can ask questions back. The Steerswoman does pick up a third character along the way, a young boy named Will who hopes to become a wizard's apprentice, and to whom I never warmed. If a steerswoman asks you a question, you must answer; if you do not, they will place you under a ban, and no steerswoman will ever answer your questions again. There were some things about it I loved - mainly the concept of Steerswomen!

And when a key piece of information was found out, it was always in such a satisfying, exciting way, but it always leads to more questions and a greater and greater need to find out the truth. I enjoyed the equality of the world: no one questions Rowan's ability to take care of herself or Bel's fightings skills, guards are as likely to be female as male...We’d love your help. But Rowan has come across a mystery - some strange 'jewels,' the source of which is unknown, and about which strange rumors have collected.

Character building, character interactions, just...everything. It is the other side of tradition's contract -- and if you refuse the question, or lie, no steerswoman will ever again answer even your most casual question. And if she asks, you must answer. I found it to be really slow and boring. The Steerswoman is the first novel in the Steerswoman series. It's solidly written, and a swords-and-(sort of ...) sorcery book with two intelligent female protagonists teaming up to investigate a mystery? But the people—I respect them, and I give them the honor they deserve, whatever they believe.”This was very interesting. It's not an intensely gripping read, but it's definitely one I turn over in my mind and consider when I'm doing other things.

If a steerswoman asks you a question, you must answer; if you do not, they will place you under a ban, and no steerswoman will ever answer your questions … Plus the whole concept of a steerswoman makes no sense logically.

[ The biggest jump happened when Will first came onto the picture and started traveling with the convoy. Queer characters and themes abound!This was something of a surprise as I have had this book in my shelves for ages; if I knew how good it was I would have read it much sooner! STRONG female characters who are exceptionally capable are a real plus. Along in her travels, she finds a strange jewel and tries to find out more about it; this is where the book begins. Readers who enjoyed The Martian by Andy Weir with it's mechanical descriptions, or Hugh Howey's Wool trilogy, should find The Steerswoman even more enjoyable. I truly loved her Elementl Logic novels!! And I loved how when the book switched back to Will's perspective, he kept their fake names for a while before learning their real ones.I enjoyed the heck out of this book. Redemption links and eBooks cannot be resold.This item has a maximum order quantity limit.Could you abandon a lost child? The whole concept of the steerswomen was delightful, and that, too, was handled in a believable way – pretty tricky for such an idealized lifestyle.
