Roanoke, The Lost Colony is a mystery book that presents the facts known about the disappearance of the colonists at Roanoke in North Carolina. The watercolor illustrations depict the colony and its settlers in vivid detail and add drama to the sometimes choppy text ("White was wounded twice in hand-to-hand combat. It is written from the perspective of a child who is interested in solving mysteries, so on top of explaining the circumstances there are boxes that pop-up to give definitions of words and also notes that were 'written' by the child to give a little more background of particular events or that explain certain particulars. After bringing many men, women, and children to the new land, White went back to England to gather supplies for the long winter. The unique format of this book consists of three distinct text boxes on each two-page spread: a chronological description of the history, background information pertaining to that history, and vocabulary words.

TERMS OF USE An intriguing read that will surely lead to fascinating discussions and varied opinions. I read only the story part of the book and ignored the additional information and most of the definitions that were provided. A good and balanced look at a historical mystery. Read carefully and check your clues.
The framing of the daughter investigating to be like her dad, and the cop-out ending of< "I know what I think, but I'm not going to tell you" bugged me, though. LOVED it!
It invites you to become a detective to study the clues and develop your own theories about what happened to those missing colonists. When I saw Jane Yolen’s name on this picture book, I knew I had to have it.
I recommend getting your hands on the entire series. There is no real ending because no one really knows what happened to the colony.

By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, at the high end of the grades 4–5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
