It was designed to meet a wide range of worldwide missions, adding a new dimension to the strategic mobility of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The battalion was posted in the area behind the main lines in order to control stragglers.

Soldiers of many different regiments are represented in these records, but it appears that most served in the 2nd New York Mounted Rifles and 10th New York Cavalry regiments. (Back): Mustered In April 27th, 1861. Re-organized As 10th Battalion New York Infantry April 26th, 1863.

The 10th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The modern 10th Mountain Division was reactivated at Fort Drum, New York, on Feb. 13, 1985, as one of the U.S. Army’s new "light infantry” divisions under the command of Brig. Infantry and sharpshooters are here. It was also known as the McChesney Zouaves or National Guard Zouaves. Note the drum atop a knapsack, draped with a flag on the top of the monument.
